Low Cost Wine Preservation
|
Rebottling $0 Instead of purchasing preservation systems, some people transfer the leftover wine into smaller bottles and then put a stopper in the bottle. Little air is present because the wine fills the small bottles to the top. It is recommended that the wine be rebottled within an hour of when the drinking stops. This method is said to extend the life of the bottle for a couple of days.
Marbles ~$1 or less Instead of rebottling, some purchase marbles to fill up the unfinished bottle before putting a stopper in the bottle neck. The problem is that the marbles might fall out when pouring. This method is said to extend the life of the bottle for a couple of days.
Spray ~$10 This system uses 100% non-toxic inert gas to remove oxygen from the opened bottle. A tube is inserted into the nozzle of the spray bottle. A stopper should be placed on top of the bottle resting against the other end of the tube, which needs to be inserted into the neck of the opened bottle midway down and against the glass. Spray for 0.5 seconds and then four shorter bursts. Pull out the tube and insert the stopper as quickly as possible. Each can has 120+ uses. This method is said to extend the life of the bottle for up to a week.
Vacuum Pump ~$15 - $40 Vacuum pumps are designed to pump out the air from an open bottle. They are portable and usually fit any size or type of wine bottle. Some resemble bicycle air pumps while others resemble fancy stoppers. Some will let you know once the air has been removed. For those that resemble bicycle air pumps, you will need to purchase stoppers to plug the bottle. Those that resemble fancy stoppers have digital temperature displays and are battery powered. This method is said to extend the life of the bottle for up to five days.
